There are two types of librettos in this area: Photocopied and Clean Typed. Photocopied materials are from the original material and is often tough to read. Should you be purchasing an original libretto so you can work on improving it yourself, it will need to be typed again and rough guesses made on some pages. These are out of copyright and in the Public Domain. So you are free to alter them as you wish. This is the first time the general public has access to original librettos for the theatrical works of Victor Herbert. They were created by various authors including Harry Bache Smith, Henry Blossom, Rida Johnson Young, Fred DeGresac and numerous others. Public Domain – A clean typed version of the 1906 prompt book forThe Red Mill which starred the famous Vaudevillians, Montgomery and Stone. It’s another libretto authored by Henry Blossom and is interesting in that little of the Montgomery and Stone “business” is really written down. Several songs are mentioned only by title or, in the case of a “Send For Sherlock Holmes” number in the second act, missing entirely from the piano vocal. Prompt books normally begin the rehearsal period prior to Broadway and often have lines crossed out, songs mentioned which never made the Broadway show or weren’t written yet. Original title page, cast list and musical number page are included.
