Description

“Old Ireland Shall Be Free” This is a Victor Herbert arrangement of the old Irish air, “The Boys of Wexford” which dates back 1799 to 1800.  The air was written in remembrance of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. This rebellion also formed the basis for Samuel Lover’s ballad and novel Rory O’Moore written in 1836 (song) and 1839 (novel).  In 1909 Herbert arranged this very old melody with words are by F. Jerome Rooney into what for many years would be considered an informal Irish National Anthem. This Herbert version is in the key of F major with a range from middle C to the F an octave above.  Again while primarily a  4 verse solo, it easily lends itself to distributing among male and female singers.
