Description

This is the never before published Public Domain photocopied original piano/vocal score of Victor Herbert’s 1905 operetta Alice and the Eight Princesses aka Wonderland, starring the soprano Bessie Wynn. The librettist was Glen McDonough, the writer for both Babes In Toyland and Miss Dolly Dollars. It was almost the second of three operettas produced by Herbert in 1905, the other two being Miss Dolly Dollars and Mlle Modiste. This operetta lasted about 7 days before it began to morph into Wonderland.  At least half of the score never made it into Wonderland but because it went into rehearsal, the songs which were cut were ready for publication. The cut material was found in the Library of Congress by Constantine Grame and compiled into the document you have here. It matches the Alice and the Eight Princesses libretto in the Libretto section of Shop VHSource. This operetta has only been produced once since it’s opening in Buffalo, New York on September 14, 1905 and that was in Tarpon Springs, FL by Mr. Grame around 2002.  Now the materials are together again.

You may read more about this operetta in the VHS Newsletter Vol 10 Oct 10 available in your User Menu on the home page.
